Care for the World

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;” Psalm 24:1   Care for the World Ministry Team.  Our aim is ‘To keep issues of of justice, peace and the integrity of creation, at the forefront of Wheatley URC’s thinking and action’. We do this as best we can, in a number of ways:

  • a regular ‘Traidcraft’ stall, after Sunday worship.
  • holding an open event every year to celebrate ‘One World Week’.
  • supporting ‘Christian Aid’ especially during Christian Aid Week each year.
  • keeping the congregation informed, through our monthly church newsletter, about for example, ‘Commitment for Life’; current campaigns being run by Christian Aid, Amnesty International and similar organizations; and local events which might be of interest.
  • taking an active role in persuading the church to become more environment and conservation friendly.
  • supporting a small African charity in Benin, run by one of our members.
  • holding our own, or supporting others, in Fairtrade Foundation‘s event, during Fairtrade Fortnight each year.
One World Week 2011
This year we focussed on awareness-raising by hosting a seminar on ‘Why Give to Charity‘. Speakers were from Oxfam and Shared Interest.
We learnt a lot from them not only about how overseas charities spend their donors money but also about the efforts they go to to ensure it is really helpful to alleviating the real problems of the poorest in the world.
Many were re-assured that Oxfam really do give a goat for each one bought! And heard a personal account of a visit to Southern Sudan.
Here is the fascinating film shown by Sally from Shared-Interest – How Candela, a Fairtrade producer, is helped by Shared Interest One of us said “I’ll never look at a Brazil nut the same way again!”

There is much more to see on the Shared Interest website.
