Have you seen the church Noticeboard?

For those locally who are still able to go outdoors: why not take your ‘allowance out for exercise ‘ and take a moment as you pass the church to be inspired and take a moment to pray.

For those shut-in and further off – here is a picture of it…

  1. And this poem – often attributed to Mother Theresa see
    for more about this poem.

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
    Forgive them anyway.

    If you are kind,
people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
    Be kind anyway.

    If you are successful,
you will win some false friends and some true enemies.
    Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
    people may cheat you.
    Be honest and frank anyway.

    What you spend years building,
    someone could destroy overnight.
    Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
    they may be jealous.
    Be happy anyway.

    The good you do today,
    people will often forget tomorrow.
    Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,
and it may never be enough.
Give the best you’ve got anyway.

    You see,
    in the final analysis it is between you and God;
it was never between you and them anyway.

Birdsong is said to raise our spirits. How much more so when heard at night? A tiny bird will have the power to colour the darkness with her song, and equal the positive influence of the moon. In Thomas Hardy’s The Darkling Thrush he contrasts the ecstatic joy of the birdsong with the physical frailty of the bird and the winter gloom. These two extracts best sum up the heart of the poem.

An aged thrush, frail, gaunt and small,
    In blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
    Upon the growing gloom.
That I could think there trembled there through
    His happy good-night air
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew
    And I was unaware.

When we feel ourselves to be in a dark place and bereft of hope if we go out of our way to cheer someone else it might surprise us to find that our darkness is a little less.
